Casa Cantarilla is a restored 18th century farm house in the Lanzarote countryside, just outside the Timanfaya National Park. The house has ten thousand square meters of land, and views across the unique Lanzarote farming landscape to the sea and outlying small islands. There are patios on three sides of the house providing shade and shelter from the sun and against winds from the sea. Inside are four double bedrooms with private bathrooms- one of them, up a staircase from the small entrance courtyard, is a spectacular room with two balconies, the best of the view, a fourposter bed and a bathroom complete with palm tree. All the rooms are furnished simply but comfortably, in keeping with the rural setting. Most have bookshelves full of books, which guests are welcome to borrow. There is a large sitting room, made from the original farm courtyard, roofed with glass. It is full of pictures and ceramics, is lined with books on all subjects, has an extensive collection of CDs mostly but not all of classical music and an efficient wood stove for winter evenings.

We - David McFarland, a retired academic, and Penelope Farmer, a much published writer, run the house as an educational association.
We can offer guests an experience of real rural Lanzarote far removed from that of the coastal tourist resorts in a house more like a home than a hotel. The standard of food, for instance, is of the essence, but home-cooked not haute cuisine. We can offer part board; breakfast every day and dinner at night if wanted. (Though we can also point guests towards the best local restaurants.) We are both good cooks, specialising in Moroccan, Spanish, Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern and vegetarian food, and are prospective members of the Slow Food Society. The dining-room has one long table: in general our guests will eat together and with us.

One final point; we are registered as an association under Spanish law, to enable us to provide activity holidays in all kinds of subjects and activities during some parts of the year. All our guests therefore will be made temporary but honoured members, for a nominal fee.
